Root canal treatment, also called endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure intended to save a severely decayed or infected tooth. The term “root canal” refers to the natural cavity in the center of the tooth that houses the pulp chamber and dental nerve. If the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to deep cavities, cracks, or trauma, it can cause severe pain and, if left untreated, lead to the formation of an abscess. Root canal treatment involves removing infected or damaged pulp tissue, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then filling and sealing it to prevent further infection.
